At six he began his studies with teacher Anna Kantor, from the Gnessin Special Music School, and at 11 he gave his first solo recital.

In 1984, Kissin appeared with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra in what would be a remarkable performance for a musician of any age, let alone a boy of 12: playing both Chopin piano concertos in a single concert. A new musical superstar was launched at that moment, and young Genya's life - already extraordinary - would never be the same.

He was, of course, hailed as a child prodigy: a boy genius with a mass of curly hair and cherubic cheeks. But Kissin, who turns 40 in October, says he was not a prodigy in the strict sense: his gift was one of musicality, rather than of purely technical accomplishment. And should the boy start to get any prodigious ideas, his parents and teacher did their best to keep his feet firmly on the ground.

"My parents and Anna Kantor were, as I understand now, very wise," he says. "Looking back at my upbringing, I realise now why they never missed a single opportunity to criticise me . . .

"They were not criticising me unfairly. I just realised that they never missed a single opportunity to do it. And I realise why: when people around were calling me a child prodigy, a little Mozart and so on, of course it was important to provide a counterbalance. And on the other hand, luckily, I have never been ambitious by nature, not at all."

Kissin rarely gives interviews but, ahead of his first Australian tour next month, he has agreed to meet in Switzerland, at the Verbier Festival.

Picture the scene: the Swiss Alps, chalets cute as cuckoo clocks and window boxes overflowing with geraniums. In this idyllic setting, former agent Martin Engstroem 18 years ago established a festival that attracts the creme de la creme of classical musicians.

It is like a summer holiday for the world's leading singers and instrumentalists, a relaxed pit stop on the northern hemisphere concert circuit.

He has stuck, more or less, to the century of romanticism and to the Russians: Rachmaninov, Prokofiev, Stravinsky. He admits he has no feel for French impressionists such as Debussy ("It's a different touch, purely physical touch"), and Bach,

Review by Richard Brooke: God bless technology!

This recording is absolutely amazing and clear. I heard Earl Wild run the Kreisler / Rachmaninoff, "Liebesleid" in the recordings Phillips Great Pianists of the twentieth century and was brought absoluty for her. But to hear Rach performed in an ideal sound of a piano for $ 150,000, blew my mind. The recording was amazing.
