Gel Beds in Spotlight

HIGH POINT - What's blue, cool and getting ready to make a big splash on retail bedding floors?
     A wave of gel bedding will be rolling into stores in the months to come, and even more gel beds will be introduced at the next few markets, bedding insiders predict.
     Gel bedding, as the name suggests, uses gel in various shapes, including buckling columns, memory foam-encased cylinders, gel-infused memory foam blocks, and solid gel pads. The gel is typically blue, a color that suggests cool sleep, a key feature that gel bedding producers say their products deliver.
     The gel boom kicked off earlier this year with Serta's successful introduction of its iComfort line, which combines gel and memory foam. Serta President Bob Sherman described that line as "an unbelievable success," and retailers say those beds are enjoying brisk sales. That success has not gone unnoticed in the highly competitive mattress arena.
     At the recent Las Vegas Market, Serta expanded its iComfort line with a gel latex model, which it said is a first in the industry, retailing at $2,999.
     And new gel beds were introduced in Las Vegas by Kingsdown, Englander, Classic Brands, ComforPedic, Gold Bond and Symbol Mattress. T3 Recovery Products introduced a pillow line featuring gel fibers.
     Kingsdown features new airflow technology and gel layers in its Blu-Tek line of specialty sleep models, retailing from $1,499 to $3,499. CEO Eric Hinshaw says the line addresses two complaints of memory foam consumers: The beds sleep hot and consumers sink too deeply into them. The Blu-Tek line "answers those two major concerns," Hinshaw said.
     Englander's new E-Gel line features cylinders of gel in designs that feature anywhere from 1,200 to 4,000 gel columns in queen-size sleep sets. The gel cylinders are encased in memory foam, and the design provides more cooling and better support, according to Kevin Toman, president.
