Businesses' Input Sought In Ashburn Outreach

With less than a week left until the deadline for completing the Ashburn community outreach surveys, county staff members are reaching out in any way possible to the more than 3,000 Ashburn businesses in hopes of garnering more responses.

The surveys are a first step in the Ashburn Community Outreach Project, to learn of the top issues that need attention in Ashburn. The surveys are specifically targeted at residents and businesses, with separate questions depending on the person's affiliation. The surveys can be found at www.loudoun.gov/ashburn-outreach.

"Right now we have about 1,300 as of this morning from residents, but only about 40 from businesses," Cindy Keegan, the project's manager, said last week. "We are looking for operators or owners, anyone who has a business."

Besides general information releases, Keegan and the county's planning staff have reached out to the Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce for help reaching businesses. While 1,300 surveys is a good number, Keegan said, given the population of Ashburn, she would like to see more responses. "My goal is 2,000," she said.

The deadline for the survey's completion is Aug. 30, but Keegan said that could be extended into September if more surveys are needed, or wanted.

"We want to get a good sampling," Keegan said.

The Board of Supervisors initiated the Ashburn Community Outreach Project to conduct a dialogue with residents and businesses to identify neighborhood and community-wide priorities. Approximately 84,000 people live in Ashburn, and more than 3,000 businesses are located in the area. The process is following a similar pattern as the Sterling/Potomac Outreach Project in 2008.

In the surveys respondents are asked to weigh in on community concerns, such as the quality of life in Ashburn, transportation, bicycle and pedestrian connectivity, housing, and public county facilities. The surveys are anonymous, and no names or information that can identify a person is collected.
