“Be part of change, or be left behind”, Beattie challenges Australia on biofuels

In Australia, former Queensland premier Peter Beattie issued a stark challenge to Australia on biofuels, at the opening of the Australian Alternative Fuels Summit in Brisbane.

“As President Obama has said, ‘the country that leads on clean energy, will lead the global economy in the 21st century.’ We have to be part of this change, or we will be left behind. Anyone who has a look will know that, in the future, 50 percent of all new jobs will be knowledge-based. We can’t afford to not be part of the technology development process, and give half the jobs away. If we do that, we’ll be a just a beach, though a beautiful one. R&D is our future. If you’ve got just 22 million people, which is less than some cities in China, or less than Southern California, you’ve got to use your brains.”

In addition to Beattie, Sir Richard Branson, former Australian Defense Minister Robert Hill, Queensland Energy minister Stephen Robertson and JGC chairman emeritus Yoshihiro Shigehisa were among the keynoters, describing daunting commercial development challenges, mixed with urgency to find the means to deploy biofuels at scale in light of increasing military, aviation and road transport demand.

Sir Richard Branson, addressing the delegates by video, said that “we are committed to taking the profits from our dirtier technologies and investing them in developing clean fuels, and said that he hopes that the company could be operating on isobutanol or algae-based fuels in 4-5 years time.

Speaking about the $25 million Virgin Earth Prize, awarded to a technology which successfully extracts carbon from the atmosphere, Branson said that the company has received many submissions, but has not seen a winner yet.

Queensland’s Minister for Energy Stephen Robertson highlighted the government’s $7 million Ethanol Action Plan from 2005, and a similar plan initiated in 2009, and commitments towards introducing E10-oriented mandates for niche markets, and general-market mandates. He said that the government intended to return to its main E5 mandate, not that federal discussions over the fuel exist tax had been successfully concluded. He also highlighted $10 million in support towards next-generation biofuels as well as a $2 million commitment towards the Queensland Sustainable Aviation consortium.

“Be part of change, or be left behind”, Beattie challenges Australia on biofuels

He said that an upcoming Australian white paper on energy was a clear opportunity to clarify strategy. He said that, in retrospect, Kyoto may have represented the high point in a coordinated global response to climate change.

Engineers release least wanted list

The so-called "white paper" was released two weeks ago. The next step is to suggest technologies that could be used to control the transfer of these species, and a report on that is expected in December, project manager Dave Wethington said.

Aquaculture: Waterfront war

While an on-line "white paper" on aquaculture by the state Division of Coastal Zone Management cites fecal pollution as a matter of concern, no one interviewed for this report could cite any pollution problems; shellfish farming is regarded as a net

Algae News » New Organization to Support California's Algae Industry

The algae industry is still very young. Most companies are either just starting early stages of commercialization or are still years away. During this time, it is beneficial to have someone in your corner, offering support and working on your behalf. There are a couple algae trade organizations that do just this, but they focus more on a national level. Currently, there aren’t too many organizations that focus at a state level. California is one of the few states lucky to have an organization looking to support the algae industry there. The California Algae Association (CalAlgae) is that organization and is brand new. Darrell Gentry, the Executive Director of CalAlgae, was willing to answer some questions about what this new organization is all about.

1) What is your background in algae?

Background began on 2 levels, but is largely self-educated since my university degree is in Urban Planning–Professional: as a professional urban planner, my consulting firm has been asked to assist with permit processing, which in California’s complex, over-regulated environment can mean lengthy timeframes, environmental hurdles, etc, I was exposed to this emerging industry as a land use, entitlement processing and environmental regulatory requirements. Elected Official: For the past 8 years, I have held elected positions in the Water Supply, Wastewater Treatment and Reclaimed Water agencies. Additionally, I served as representative to statewide agencies involved with water, water reuse/recycling and wastewater processes. One agency embarked on a resource recovery program and an energy independence strategic plan some years ago. This work gave rise to discovering algae biofuel research and the emergence of San Diego region as a hub for research and industry development.

As a part of these elected positions, I met Congressman Brian Bilbray, a member of the House Energy Committee, who spoke about algae biofuels emergence. I have spoke with him several times since that initial period. His interest is still very strong but is frustrated with State officials, elected and bureaucracies, slowest to recognize the potential for algae biofuels as an important part of an energy independence strategy, which assists with GHG emission reduction. The resource recovery program involves biosolids as biofuel and for commercial use as fertilizer additive, especially phosphorus, nitrates and manganese. This program has become recognized as an environmental leader by U.S. EPA. Algae is a problem issue for wastewater operations but now may be re-evaluated for a potential opportunity.
