Lent begins on Ash Wednesday in the Western Catholic Church. In the Eastern Church, Lent Begins on Clean Monday. The Eastern Church refers to Eastern Catholic Churches in communion with the Pope and the Western Catholic Church. These Eastern Churches do not use the Latin or Roman Rite. Some examples of Eastern Catholic Churches are the Maronite Church, the Italo-Albanian Church, and the Syro-Malabar Church. In the Eastern Catholic Church, while the Lenten fast is relaxed on the weekends, Sundays are counted as part of the 40 days of Lent. Therefore, the Great Lent (as it is called in the East) is always celebrated on the seventh Monday before Easter (which is a different date than in the Western Church). In the Eastern Church, the first day of Lent is called Clean Monday because we are beginning anew by leaving behind sinful attitudes and non-fasting foods. We receive ashes as a sign of penance. In the Old Testament, the Ninevites did penance by wearing sack cloth and heaping ashes on their heads. The custom of wearing ashes began in the early church when Christians who had committed grave sins, did public penance. These sinners would wear hair shirts for the period of 40-days. The Bishops would bless the hair shirts and sprinkle the penitents with ashes made from the palms of the previous year. The sinners would then be turned out of the church because of their sins just as Adam and Eve were turned out of Paradise because of their sin. The penitents did not return to the Church again until Maundy or Holy Thursday when they had won reconciliation through the forty days of penance and sacramental absolution.
