F. Joe Garcia’s nurse manager seems to have taken a management approach with Theory X in mind. She believes that workers naturally do not want to work and so it is the job of the manager to enforce compliance and productivity through “strict rules, constant supervision, and the threat of punishment (reprimands, withheld raises, and threats of job loss).” This approach parallels the Scientific Management theory which values efficiency above all else (Whitehead, Weiss, & Tappen, 2010, p. 14). I find this approach to be counteractive since leading someone with a whip and harsh words usually stirs up anger and grudges. Angry persons usually do not feel benevolent toward someone who hurts them.             If I were the manager, I would utilize Theory Y which states that since people really want to work, all that a manager must do to encourage them is use guidance and reward. This parallels with the Servant Leadership theory which values people and how they are treated in the workplace (Whitehead, et al., 2010, p. 15). This is because I believe that people usually mirror the treatment that they are receiving.
