Corvallis woman wins OSU contest

Danielle White of Corvallis was one of five winning writers in Oregon State University's first sustainability writing contest.

White, a senior in wood science and technology, submitted "Buffalo Road," which appeared with the other winners' writings in an insert in OSU's Daily Barometer in May.

The contest, titled "The Great Work: Re-imagining Humanity as the Planet Changes," was sponsored by OSU's Spring Creek Project and the Student Sustainability Initiative. The winners each received $100.

The contest was funded by a grant from the OSU Student Sustainability Initiative. Erin Harrington, a graduate student in English and last year's Spring Creek Project intern, wrote the grant proposal and directed the contest.

LBCC underwater robot team takes third

Linn-Benton Community College's Remote Operated Vehicle team took third place in the Marine Advanced Technology Education 10th Annual International Underwater Robotics Competition, held in June at the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.

The team competed against ROVs from around the world, placing behind Purdue University and a team from California. LBCC's team was one of only two to successfully complete all of the missions twice.

The final scores were based on a combination of the mission scores and scores for the team's technical report, poster and oral examination.

LBCC ROV team members attending included Quinten Ballard, Grant Blake, Nicholas Cantrell, Benjamin Dean, Jody Eaton, Alexander Frisk, Kristoffer Hess, William Hine, Jeremy Louke, Ivan Merlin, Nathan Murrow, Rachael Nolan, Coquille Rex, Symone Stinson, Michael Tilse, Dillyn Winn and advisor Greg Mulder.

The LBCC team headed to the platform three additional times, to receive the Aloha Award, which is awarded by other teams to their favorite and most spirited team; the Sharkpedo Award, awarded by judges for the best-engineered ROV; and the MATE MVP award, won by team member and machine tool technology student Michael Tilse.
