Bryan County public safety reports
Entering motor vehicles
Lewis Drive in the Sterling Creek subdivision of Richmond Hill was the site of three separate incidents of entering autos earlier this month. All three incidents took place either late at night Jan. 4 or in the early morning of Jan. 5.
In only one case was anything taken from one of vehicles, that being a leather CD case containing several CDs and a nylon organizer.
At least two of the vehicles had been left unlocked. The owner of one of the unlocked vehicles mentioned this was the second time her vehicle had been entered in just more than a month, but added since she didn’t keep anything valuable in her car other than a child seat and stroller, she didn’t feel the need to lock it because it was too aggravating to have to unlock it.
Theft by taking
Jan. 2 - A Belfast River Road resident reported that sometime between Dec. 30 and Jan. 2 almost $10,000 worth of nautical equipment, including a Simrad IS 12 navigation system valued at more than $5,000, had been taken from a boat parked in his backyard.
Possession of marijuana
Jan. 1 – After witnessing a vehicle fail to move over and almost strike his patrol car while he was assisting another officer change a stranded motorist’s tire on Interstate 95 south, Richmond Hill Police Officer Ruben Acosta pursued and stopped the vehicle.
After Acosta noted, what he felt, was the odor of burnt marijuana while the driver gathered his license and insurance papers, he brought his narcotics K-9 Darky to the vehicle and allowed the animal to sniff around the exterior of the vehicle. Darky gave a positive response at both the driver’s and passenger’s doors. When Acosta questioned the driver, Lavarr Thurgood Morgan of Columbia, S.C., Morgan told the officer there was marijuana in a cookie tin on the passenger’s side floorboard. Morgan was then arrested. A search of the vehicle revealed the marijuana along with a smoking device located on the driver’s side floorboard.
