City not happy with plans for Golden State

The city of Kingsburg has not embraced the just-released future plans for Golden State Boulevard through the town. The Fresno County Council of Governments -- COG -- has prepared design plans for an improvement project for 13 miles of Golden State from Mission Street in Kingsburg to American Avenue, north of Fowler. COG has been working with Kingsburg, Selma and Fowler on the design plans for 16 months and held community meetings in each city. Those plans were released to Kingsburg recently and they didn't sit well with city leaders. The Golden State project is to include roadway improvements to improve economic development along the street in the three cities. Peters started with the Mountain View interchange with Golden State. He said in the new design, the interchange stays much the same with two lanes in each directions and left-turn lanes. He said with projects proposed for that intersection -- like the Selma Crossing retail development -- about 6,000 new cars could be entering the intersection hourly. The planned intersection could not accommodate that kind of traffic increase, he said. A roundabout is planned at the Draper Street and Golden State crossing. Peters showed council members a rendering of how traffic could back up on a roundabout when a train is crossing the tracks. He said with the traffic backup, emergency vehicles could be hampered in responding. Also there is concern that the width of the roundabout is not large enough to accommodate semi trucks and trailers.
