But the rain held off just long enough for Johnson, who opened with back-to-back birdies and holed an 85-foot bunker shot for eagle on No. 4, to take the lead.

"The way I got started, I was hoping that we were going to keep on playing," Johnson said.

Johnson shot 29 on the front nine for the second straight day - he played the front in 17-under par for the week - to close the third round at 6-under 65.

It was the first win of the year and fifth of his career for Johnson, who moved to No. 4 in the world. He became the first player since Tiger Woods to go straight from college and win in each of his first 4 years on the PGA Tour.

"I was never concerned - more frustrated than anything," Johnson said about not winning this year. "Because I felt like I played some really good golf this year, just have not been able to quite get it done."

Johnson wasn't the only big winner Saturday.

Ian Poulter birdied four of his last five holes for a 64, making him one of eight players who moved inside the top 100 in the FedEx Cup standings and advance to the second playoff event next week outside Boston.

William McGirt, the last of the 125 players who qualified for the playoffs, birdied the 17th hole that pushed him to No. 96. Padraig Harrington went from No. 124 to No. 80 with his tie for 13th.

At Mirabel, Quebec, Brittany Lincicome sank a par putt on the 18th hole in a driving rain to win the Canadian Women's Open by one stroke.

Lincicome closed with a 2-under 70 to finish at 13-under 275 and edge defending champion Michelle Wie and Stacy Lewis. It was her fifth LPGA Tour victory and second this year. Lewis had the low round of the day with a 67 to finish tied with Wie at 12 under.

* At Gleneagles, Scotland, Thomas Bjorn won a five-way sudden-death playoff at the fifth extra hole to capture the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles.
