Star Wars: The Old Republic preview and interview – or: How We Learned to Stop ...

You won't find much coverage of massively multiplayer online (MMO) games on GameCentral. And that's for the simple reason that no one on the team has very much experience or interest in them. The time to play them is also a factor, but despite several attempts to understand the appeal of everything from World Of Warcraft to Eve Online we still don't get it. We even tried Star Wars Galaxies, the first attempt to make a Star Wars MMO. Set in the original trilogy timeline the game was not a major success, in part because people got upset at how hard it was to become a Jedi. The Old Republic is set 3,500 years in the past though, when lightsabres were ten a penny and the Sith Empire was more than just one old bloke and the work experience kid. But despite seeing plenty of gameplay videos and demonstrations we remained unconvinced. Especially as one of the major new reveals at Gamescom was something called Huttball. Basically a Star Wars version of TV shows like Gladiators, watching Jedi jumping over fire pits and using their lightsabres to fight for a point-scoring ball couldn't look less like the Star Wars of our childhood if it had Jar Jar Binks in it. But playing a MMO properly requires a dedication of tens, if not hundreds, of hours and as you might imagine we didn't get that at Gamescom. What we got instead was associate lead designer Emmanuel Lusinchi, whose Gallic charm and raw enthusiasm might just have convinced us that this is the MMO to change our, and perhaps your, opinion of the whole genre… We have to admit we've been dreading this interview. We made the appointment and it's an important game, but we've never really like MMOs and we despise the Star Wars prequels. We have always like BioWare's work though, so... we're conflicted. We don't know whether to be excited about the game or not, is that an unusual situation to be in? No, no, no, you're a great example. There are many people exactly like you and they are an important part of the market.

But we also know that the Jedi Knight is going to be super popular, especially the first day, everyone says, 'I want to be Luke Skywalker!' That's fine and we've built the game so that even if every single person was a Jedi Knight the game would still

Some of the classes in World of Warcraft are getting major overhauls with the upcoming release of Cataclysm. Today we’ll take a look at what major changes Death Knights can expect. Runes will now regenerate differently. Instead of each rune type regenerating at the same time, they will now regenerate in order. So instead of each rune regenerating as soon as you use them they will regenerate one at a time for each type.

Death Knights now have a dedicated talent tree for tanking. The Blood tree is now your tanking tree, while the undead and frost trees are DPS. Hopefully this will allow Blizzard to add some cool DPS specializations to each of the DPS trees.

Runic Empowerment is a new mechanic which will allow runes on cooldown to instantly activate. It will be important to have all your runes on cooldown as much as possible so that when runic empowerment occurs you can take advantage of it. Blizzard has stated that in most cases if you can reflect the spell then you can copy it.

That about does it for Death Knights, as you can see the class is changing substantially. The addition of a pure tanking tree and the new runic empowerment mechanic should be welcome additions to all Death Knights out there.

Players will also see new spells added once Cataclysm launches with the new level cap of 85. At level 81 you can learn Outbreak, which allows you to infect a target with both Frost Fever and Blood Plague at no rune cost. This will especially be useful for when you are switching targets or your diseases have been dispelled. Necrotic Strike becomes available at level 83. This attack does weapon damage and applies a debuff that absorbs healing done based on damage done. The last spell you get is Dark Simulacrum at level 85. When you hit a target with this spell you will apply a debuff that copies the next spell from the target and use it.
