3 easy exercises that won't kill you to do sitting down

THE NURSE IS IN

By Chris Hammerlund

Dear Chris: My husband and I bought a family membership to a gym that has all those pieces of fancy equipment. We went two or three times and then stopped because, well, I’m not sure why we stopped but it just became too hard to make our schedules work. Any fitness advice for the holidays? Patrice in Zion.

Dear Patrice, yes I know the Best Intentions Gone Awry theory of fitness. First, don’t be so hard on yourself because exercise is never as much fun as fitness people say it is. It’s work. You sweat. Your muscles hurt. Besides, when a fitness expert tells you how wonderful exercise is, it’s because they’re already in the kind of physical shape you’d like to achieve. Thanks to pregnancies, childbirth, and just the onset of age, most women experience occasional weak-bladder moments, although men aren’t exempt. But men generally are embarrassed about “kegel contractions” because, men usually believe this is a woman’s exercise. But it turns that mean can benefit from the tensing for the same reasons. Now let’s get to your legs and feet. If you’ve ever experienced shin splints, you know they hurt like the devil. Try this. Rest your feet flat on the ground and lift only your toes up and down several times. It strengthens the affected tissues. Draw invisible letters with each foot to develop ankle stability. Also, it gives you a good excuse to take off your shoes under the desk. None of the three exercises by themselves will make you fit. Let’s not be silly. But fitness is more than specific exercise regimes. It’s about approaching the idea of diet, exercise and life choices in a broad “make sense” equilibrium.

Who am I, and why would a person listen to me? Both fair questions. I’m Christine Hammerlund and I’ve been a nurse for years. I have delivered babies, saved lives, and cared for hundreds of patients through their medical triumphs and tragedies. Now I run Assured Healthcare at http://www.assuredhealthcare.com . We're a multi-million dollar medical staff provider in Illinois. I live in Antioch, Ill. Got health questions for me, whether large or small? I’ll answer.
