Pacifica: Sampling of seafood tacos bodes well for future visits
Aug 26, 2011 (El Paso Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A new Mexican seafood restaurant has opened on the West Side, one of several that have set up shop in the past year.
Pacifica Seafood & Bar serves fresh, delicious food in a nice, open setting. There are plenty of tables, booths and bar seating throughout the restaurant.
My friends Frank and Mike came along for lunch on a recent Monday.
As we perused the menu, a bowl of chips and two kinds of salsa were set on the table. The attentive waiter brought us a cup of shrimp soup. We quickly broke up some tortilla chips into the broth and slurped it up. It was a wonderfully rich seafood broth.
An appetizer of rock shrimp ($6.86) followed. The large crustaceans were lightly battered and fried. They were swabbed with two sauces, wasabi and spicy mayo. We loved them and quickly devoured the shrimp.
The restaurant has numerous entrees, such as marinated cod, coconut shrimp and red snapper with chutney. There are salads, cocktails and soups. One is called Levanta Muertos, which translates as "Raising the Dead." If it is anything like that cup of shrimp broth, it should be excellent. Appetizers range from tuna pizza to oysters on the half shell.
Instead of getting a full entree, we decided to choose a few tacos and tostadas. We were really excited because we were told all corn tortillas were handmade.
The tacos range in price from $2 for a Pacifica fish taco to $9.92 for the lobster taco. The tostadas all cost $3 to $4.
We started with the Taco Pacifica shrimp taco ($2.51),
a huge breaded shrimp covered in a creamy chipotle sauce and black beans, all nestled in a warm, soft corn tortilla. The shrimp batter wasn't thin and the sauce had enough of a bite to make it interesting. The black beans were creamy and flavorful.
