Hazard escape hood for the home, office or train
The Hazmat Hood is a respirator/escape hood designed to be carried in the pocket or handbag.
According to its manufacturer the hood requires no training to use and can be slipped over the face and head in under 10 seconds.
Based on a similar model used by the Israeli Homeland Defence, the one-size-fits-all design includes an air filter to protect against smoke inhalation for a minimum 15 “additional lifesaving” minutes to vacate a smoke-filled area.
Jeff Charlton of the Beckenham, London-based Hazmat Hood company said the hood provided the wearer with the same levels of protection for escape purposes as a full-face military type respirator .
“It stands out from the competition because one size fits all and there’s no training required. Other protection devices must still pass needlessly stringent and ineffectual personal protective equipment (PPE) safety laws before use — not much good when you only have a few minutes post-disaster to act,” he added
Charlton noted that an estimated 80% of all fire-related deaths are the result of smoke inhalation injuries rather than burns, "which is a terrifying thought. The Hazmat Hood could prevent a vast proportion of these fatalities”.
He concluded: “Whether you are at work or at home, out shopping or on the train, the Hazmat Hood will allow you to move from a toxic environment to safety.”
The manufacturer quotes a price of £15 for the hood.
