‘Cul de Sac' returns to EN
“Cul de Sac” has a familiar neighborhood to call home again: the San Antonio Express-News.
Richard Thompson's lighthearted, character-driven comic strip returns to the Express-News today as a Sunday-only feature, replacing the outgoing “Family Tree” by Signe Wilkinson in the Sunday comics section. The E-N ran “Cul de Sac” on a trial basis for several weeks in 2008.
“Cul de Sac” centers mostly on Alice Otterloop, a wide-eyed 4-year-old with an innocent but gregarious outlook on life that, naturally, includes an irresistible urge to dance on manhole covers.
“She goes to preschool,” Thompson says, “and it's about the general surreal-ity of life, at least as seen by a child.”
Thompson likes to say his strip is about “little kids who never shut up” and that its lifeblood is the consistent chatter. But Alice is hardly the only one who makes noise in the “Cul de Sac” panels.
The strip also features Alice's older, albeit quieter, brother, Petey, as well as their parents, Madeline and Peter, plus Alice's best buddies Dill and Beni and other doodled little faces in its suburban setting. The surname Otterloop is a play on Outer Loop, the counterclockwise ring of the Beltway that encircles Washington, D.C.
Thompson, who lives in Arlington, Va., with his wife and two daughters, started “Cul de Sac” in 2004 as a Sunday-only strip in the Washington Post Magazine. He expanded the adventures of Alice and her nearest and dearest to the other six days of the week when the strip launched as a daily in September 2007.
Thompson also crafts “Richard's Poor Almanac,” a weekly in the Washington Post Style section. “Almanac” is perhaps best known for the cartoon “Make the Pie Higher,” a mishmash of choice George W. Bush quotes that went viral online.
Thompson's also quite popular with his fellow cartoonists. This year he won the 2011 Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year, the highest honor the profession bestows, from his peers in the National Cartoonists Society .
