Area golf column: Myrtle Beach area courses largely unscathed by Irene
Yrtle Beach area golf courses came through tropical storm-strength winds and heavy rain from Hurricane Irene largely unscathed.Most courses on the north end of the Strand were closed Saturday with formidable winds still prevalent in the morning and cleanup necessary, but there was little structural damage to courses.
Even Bald Head Island Club off the coast of Southport, N.C., was able to open nine holes Sunday morning. The back nine reopened Monday after part of a cart bridge that got washed away was repaired.
“There was a lot of pruning by Mother Nature but no major damage, just a few big limbs, some small limbs and a lot of leaves, but nothing that was really a factor,” said Bald Head assistant pro Jeff Phieffer. “We were lucky, to be honest with you.”
The Bald Head staff boarded up the clubhouse, evacuated the island Friday afternoon and returned Sunday morning to find minimal damage and no flooding. “It filled up our lagoons so we were happy about that,” Phieffer said.
At the 81-hole St. James Plantation in Southport, 100 employees of the facility began clearing heavy debris from the courses Sunday. The 27-hole Members Club and Reserve Club opened Monday, the Founders Club will open Tuesday and the Players Club will open Thursday.
“We got the typical debris that comes from pine trees when you get high winds,” said Dave Kjome, St. James’ director of golf. “Once you get 40 to 50 mph winds those pine trees shed like a dog.
“… We were very fortunate. I think everyone fared very well. I haven’t heard of any incidents at any other places.”
Courses on the south end of the Strand were generally spared even minor damage. Pawleys Plantation was even able to host the Know Your Score celebrity charity tournament Saturday, albeit with a two-hour delay to the shotgun start to 11 a.m. The tournament featured several celebrities including Richard Dent, Meadowlark Lemon, Steve Largent and Ed “Too Tall” Jones.

In South Carolina, emergency officials in Beaufort County, which includes Hilton Head Island, worked to make certain that construction sites on major highways could be cleared quickly in case evacuations of coastal areas became necessary.
Games affected are along the Atlantic coast from Hilton Head Island through Charleston and up to the Grand Strand or Myrtle Beach. Schools in coastal areas of North Carolina followed suit. Football games scheduled for Thursday in Florida were moved up
