Playing With Food: The Art of Judith G. Klausner
The Oreo cameos take between two and six hours, I’d say, depending on the level of detail. Some of them have more fine detail than others. But it also depends on the particular microtextures of the Oreo itself. On that small of a scale, they do have differences in texture from cookie to cookie. Some are easier or harder to work with. The environment, in terms of heat and humidity, is also a big difference in terms of speed, I can work, and how many times I have to stop ... When I work during the summer (I do not have central air conditioning), I often put the pieces in the refrigerator so that the firm will glaze and allow finer details sculptural.
How did food become of interest to you as an artist? I know you've worked with unusual materials, such as insects, in the past, but how did undertake food in the picture?
Well, in the non-artistic in my life, food has always been an interest.I love food. I love cooking. I love to eat, so it's a big part of my life. I am also hypoglycemic, so I have to eat very often, food is very consistent part of my life. It was for a long time. In some ways, it's a natural progression of insects curiously, I think, because when I started watching the insects, he had to do with looking at things that otherwise I would just like to look beyond. After I worked with insects for a while, I decided I really wanted to open my artistic horizons, [and] it became a challenge to look around me and try to see what I could not see and what objects there were in my life who were really background noise. I was looking for things that are separated from their normal context, aesthetic qualities were interesting and had important social implications, and the food was certainly all these things.
You mentioned the difficulty of working with cookies, depending on their texture and sensitivity to temperature and humidity, but it seems that the work you do to embroider on toast would be an order of magnitude more difficult . But maybe I just think that because I do not know how to embroider? ! It is also because toast is simply much less forgiving than other materials I was working with: Once a piece of bread cracks, there is nothing you can do with it - it is cracked. If you're lucky, your first point after it, and if you are not, it is after you've worked on it for twenty hours. The egg took the longest one of the pieces. It was really dense and stitches, as I embroider, the toast became drier and drier and small pieces were falling as I went. It was really a process rather itchy, because I found myself with bread crumbs all over me. Finally, as the toast became increasingly dry, I was more seams on the top of the other seam. For the last two hours, I was convinced everything was collapsing.Fortunately, once it was completed, it holds together pretty well, but I would not fall!
Ever wonder if rub-ons work on Shrinky Dinks? - Cindy deRosier
I was expecting quite a bit of ripping and distortion. Indeed, some of the rub-ons did rip and/or distort, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was minimal. In both cases the words look pretty good. There didn't seem to be any difference between manufacturers; instead, the heat of the oven (and thus the rate and direction of shrinking) seemed to be what caused the variation. It was also crucial that the rub-on was applied thoroughly. If there was even a tiny bit that wasn't burnished properly, that area ripped.
