Longtime attorneys, including County Attorney Don Kleine, couldn't come up with a comparable case.
"Certainly, I've never seen anything like it," said Kleine, an attorney for three decades.
Indeed, the surreal scene was even more difficult to stomach for the Brazilian woman who has spent the past 18 months in Omaha searching for her family, then for justice.
Earlier this week, Tatiane Klein was simply hoping for a conviction of Goncalves, the one man charged in the murders.
Then Thursday morning, she found herself giving her assent to prosecutors to cut a deal that would give Goncalves a 20-year sentence, of which he would serve only 10 years in prison.
In return, Goncalves vowed to testify against the man prosecutors believe was the ringleader in the case — Jose "Carlos" Oliveira-Coutinho — and a third worker, Elias Lourenco-Batista. Prosecutors say they expect to charge those men in the next few days.
Flanked by Omaha police detectives — even Police Chief Alex Hayes entered the courtroom — Klein sat in the front row and listened to Goncalves tearfully admit that he helped kill Vanderlei Szczepanik, then Jaqueline, then little Christopher.
Ten minutes after the hearing, Klein sat in a conference room and listened as police broke the news to her about how Goncalves says her family died.
