I remember when I was 16 I wanted to get my tongue and bellybutton pierced soooo badly. I asked my mom but obviously being a typical Naija parent, she said no. Since I always find a way to get what I want, I started doing extensive research on these two piercings because, [you guessed it] I was going to do them myself.

I spent countless hours watching YouTube videos, reading piercing stories on the Body Modification Ezine and researching piercing tools and kits. After building enough confidence that I could do it myself, I bought two piercing kits and some jewellery from eBay. The kits were totally legit and everything came in brand new packaging.

I watched a few videos on the procedures again and I self pierced my tongue and navel.

For those who are wondering, a navel piercing is way more painful than a tongue piercing. Unfortunately for me, I changed the jewellery on my tongue too early (I was eager to hide it from my mom) and the flesh coloured acrylic filler popped out. I never bothered to put it back in hence why I no longer have my tongue pierced.

My navel ring is still intact after having to pierce it a second time because the first time it got infected.

I’m not an advocate for such behaviour but I think the story is funny so I thought I would share. I’ve also jumped out of an airplane (with a parachute on) and I think both activities are tied for the craziest things I’ve done so far in life.
