Jazz notes: Junior Mance, Bucky Pizzarelli, Jon Faddis
Pianist Junior Mance and his quartet will be in Madison to celebrate the release of their new CD, “Letter from Home,” at the Shanghai Jazz Restaurant and Bar this Friday and Saturday. This is a rare opportunity to hear Mance in the Garden State.
A walking treasure trove of jazz, Mance has played with everyone from Charlie Parker to Louis Armstrong. He anchored the groups of Lester Young and Dizzy Gillespie in the 1950s, and was singer Sarah Vaughan’s accompanist of choice for many years.
At 83, Mance remains spry and soulful at the keyboard, and plays in a bluesy style reminiscent of one of his closest collaborators and friends, hard bop saxophonist Cannonball Adderley. Like fellow jazz octogenarians McCoy Tyner and Roy Haynes, Mance spurs his imagination by playing with young musicians, and can often be heard on Sunday nights at the Café Loup in Manhattan. The joyful and spontaneous spirit of these sessions is captured on this CD, with Hidé Tanaka on bass, Ryan Anselmi and Andrew Hadro on saxophones, and Kim Garey on the drums.

Guitarist and Paterson native Bucky Pizzarelli will perform at the Glen Rock Inn in Bergen County with bassist Jerry Bruno this Thursday. At 85, Pizzarelli is one of the deans of American jazz guitar, and performs in a bright, clear-toned and swinging style. A veteran of the “Tonight Show” and Benny Goodman bands, he has collaborated with Bruno on a series of spirited recordings which evoke the virtuosic 1930s swing of gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt.

New Jersey’s own Jon Faddis hosts a six-night feast for trumpet lovers at the Blue Note in New York, tonight through Sunday. He will be joined each night by two guest trumpeters, who will include Brian Lynch, Claudio Roditi, Sean Jones, Lew Soloff, Terell Stafford and Michael Rodriguez. This mix of young and seasoned talent promises to produce fireworks and inspired improvisation.
