A ruana is a type of poncho, but instead of going over your head, it's wrapped around your shoulders. Ruanas can be ruffled or fringed at the edges, and they're not closed in front as ponchos are. Ruanas can be worn open and loose, or with one side flung over the opposite shoulder. Some companies refer to them as "wraps" or "blanket wraps." Many of the new ponchos come in lightweight acrylics, synthetic blends or merino wool. Macys.com recently had five Internet pages filled with a dizzying array of ponchos and near-ponchos, some starting under $20. You can still order a crocheted one, if your tastes are traditional.
