Task force: More people reporting hoarders

A task force of Southwest Florida is talking about hoarding. They say that hoarding is more common than the public realizes.

Adam Leath, with Lee County Animal Control, is an officer with the hoarding task force. He says the team responds to a call hoarding every day in other Lee County alone.

He says it is not because hoarding is more of a problem, but because more cases are reported. People look out for more.

"We are definitely seeing that people report it more often and that legitimate cases of animal hoarding that come to light are coming to light more often they did in the past," said Leath.

He explained the purpose of the task force is to intervene before the hoarding reaches a dangerous point.

Wednesday in a house in Punta Gorda, the decomposition of animal excrement, and garbage years ago have been found.

"Some of the bodies were decomposed to the fact we could not recognize them.In fact, we are working on identifying them, "said Brian Jones, with animal control in Charlotte County.

Leath led the anti-monopolization of Southwest Florida and said the task force is now in its second year of operation.

"When you first begin to educate and enforce last, we find that people are more receptive and more willing to seek help and find recidivism - or likihood it will happen again - decrease" at he said.

Leath said that there are three types of monopolists: - The exploiter

He says that if the working group draws monopolist in time, that person can return to hoarding.

But he said that if it gets too far, as the case Wednesday in Punta Gorda, "They will be at 100 percent of the time, return to this behavior, even after the immediate crisis was averted."

Leath said intervention is critical.

"What few people can do and the difference they can make in someone's life," said Leath.

Leath said the public has played a key role in the last two years in alerting the authorities. But many cases have fallen through the cracks.
