Perry Visits Nashua Manufacturer
High-tech lasers beamed and heavy machinery hummed as Gov. Rick Perry -- and the horde of media that followed -- caused a bit of a stir among workers while doing a quick walk-through of Resonetics, one of Nashua's booming high-tech manufacturing companies
Peering through plastic safety glasses, Perry toured the plant, flanked by company president Clifford Gabay and CEO Christopher Banas.
After the tour, Perry sat down with about a dozen businessmen representing various Nashua-based industries, including Shane McLaughlin, of Nashua Jet Aviation, who greeting Perry as a fellow pilot, and Jeff Rose of BAE Systems, which also operates a plant in Irving, Texas.
In fact, there were plenty of personal connections made around the table throughout the course of the hour-long visit -- from Banas' Austin, Texas, roots where he co-founded CardioSpectra, a medical research start-up that eventually relocated to Billerica, MA, to the gold Texas A&M rings worn by both Perry and Nashua Chamber of Commerce President Chris Williams, a native Texan.
Williams congratulated Perry on being the first "Aggie" governor of Texas, and challenged him to be the first to win the New Hampshire Primary -- and go all the way to the White House.
Perry managed to hit several of his most salient talking points -- the importance of getting Americans back to work, the problem of tax burdens for business owners, and the need for tort reform, particularly as it affects aviation and automobile manufacturers.
He even got to talk about an issue that some critiques see as a soft spot on his resume as governor of Texas -- his stance on undocumented immigrants -- after George Katis, owner of Nashua Wallpaper, framed the question around the number of low-income children living in the state's larger cities, including Nashua and Manchester.
"You being a governor of a border state, especially now with drug wars going on and so forth, I'm very interested in what your immigration policy is," Katis said.

NASHUA, N.H. -- A delivery truck carrying copies of the Telegraph of Nashua struck a pedestrian early Saturday in Nashua, the paper said.
Police said the pedestrian was struck on the Exit 7 overpass at about 1:30 a.m. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital, but police offered no information on the person's injuries. Investigators have not said how the victim was hit, but said the vehicle did not leave the roadway. The truck driver was not hurt.
