“Hats and Heels, A Shopping Event and Night at the Races”: 5 p.m., Aug. 12, Emerald Downs, 2300 Emerald Downs Drive, Auburn. Shopping begins at 5 p.m., first race at 6. Shop, bet and celebrate fashion at the races.  Access to the shopping event is free with gate admission, and ladies are encouraged to dress in their finest, fashionable racing attire. Auburn Good Ol’ Days: Aug. 12-14, downtown Auburn. Parade, live entertainment, street dance, car show, food, art show, crafts, activities, fun run. Information: 253-939-3389 or www.auburngoodoldays.com.

Auburn International Festival: 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Aug. 13, Plaza Park at 2 W. Main St., right across from City Hall. Features music, singing and dancing from some of the many cultural groups represented in Auburn. Free to the public.  Schedule: 10-10:50 a.m. – Centro de Amistad Cristiano Band; 11:15 a.m.-noon – PAYO Filipino Dance Group; noon-1:30 p.m. – Good Ol’ Days Parade; 1:30-2 p.m. – Samoan For All Dance Group; 2:05-2:25 p.m. – Marina Shats; 2:30-3 p.m. – Auburn Valley YMCA Zumba; 3:15-4 p.m. – Parousia Brass Band, Vocalists and Choir.

Poets on Parade and other Literary Adventures: 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Aug. 14, Auburn Avenue Theater, 10 Auburn Ave.. Part of Auburn Good Ol’ Days, hosted by Auburn’s own Striped Water Poets. From Kingston through Tacoma, poets, authors and small press publishers will flock to the theater to take part in the literary event. Open mic poetry contest from 3-5 p.m., Cash prizes. Auburn participants include: Robert Blevins (Adventure Books); Marjorie Rommel (reporter, teacher, poet); Laurie Kizziah (teacher); Mark Ricca (author); Len Elliott (the crossword puzzle guy); Gerald A. McBreen (coordinator, Striped Water Poets).

Swashbuckling Pirate Island Adventure Golf fun for everyone at ...

Pirate Island Adventure Golf, an innovative and fun concept designed to encourage families to enjoy the sport, is coming shortly to Milton Keynes.

Abbey Hill Golf Centre (www.abbeyhillgc.co.uk), based in Two Mile Ash, will be unveiling the exciting new activity this autumn after plans were given the green light unanimously by Milton Keynes planning authority.

Pirate Island Adventure Golf - designed to appeal to all age groups - is based around mini golf with players requiring only a putter to navigate their ball around an 18-hole theme-park course festooned with obstacles.

Located in a dedicated section of the public pay-and-play facility, Pirate Island Adventure Golf boasts an array of fun features, including huge signature ship and waterfalls, lakes, streams and islands, with rafts, treasure chests, cannons and decorative crocodiles and swords adding to the pirate-themed landscape. It will also be wheelchair-friendly.

The attraction has been developed at a cost of £775,000 - the largest investment in the 39-year history of Abbey Hill Golf Centre - and will provide the community of Milton Keynes with the ideal introduction to golf, and encourage an active and healthy lifestyle, as well as benefit from the creation of five new jobs.

Colin Mayes, Chief Executive of Burhill Golf & Leisure which owns Abbey Hill, said: "Pirate Island Adventure Golf will provide guests, including families, with an ideal introduction to the sport - and we would like to extend our appreciation to Milton Keynes Council for recognising our attempts to provide the local community with a healthy and fun way of enjoying golf."

Paul Sanders, Assistant Director, Leisure, of Milton Keynes Council, said: "I am delighted to see that the golf complex at Abbey Hill has attracted such a large investment and that the new leisure facility for Milton Keynes has created extra jobs.

"The added benefit is that this new facility will help bring more families to the complex, and show that taking part in sport can be a great way to relax and spend your leisure time.
