Airman's homecoming joke was regrettable, not funny
Today, anyone can have five minutes of fame, if not 15. There are Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, networks, horse mackerel channel cable TV. All are hungry for a fascinating story. Often, however, any story will do.
Many people, including Air Force families, do not know what they are getting into. They are concerned about work, war, the home front. They want to share good news or a tender moment. Then they discover all the paris are open when the dogs 24 / 7 have their red meat. They come to rue their willingness to share their lives with strangers.
Maybe Staff Sgt.Michael Nardone will come to regret his decision to let the world watch his back, maybe not. Other Air Force families, however, do not think most Nardone joke played on his wife, Leah Nardone.
Michael Lea wanted to surprise when he returned to Florida a week earlier from a deployment to Germany. Michael contacted officials at Holmes Medical Center, where Leah worked as a technician ultrasound, and asked their help for a little fun at the expense of Leah. They agreed.
"We had this request of a member of our armed forces," spokesman Elliot Cohen of the hospital said in a telephone interview. "We wanted to respect his request."
Cohen did even better: he warned the media.
The hospital arranged for colleagues to say that Leah a trauma patient needs his attention. The patient was Michael, nestled in a hospital bed. He had medical equipment around him.
Leah slid the curtain, saw her husband covered her mouth with one hand and began to cry.
Reporters gleefully noted every detail.Photographers and videographers captured images. Florida Today hastily posted a story online. Readers have started ringing immediately. Of the 35 comments below, 30 took Michael to the task.
I tried unsuccessfully to track down Nardone. I wanted to turn, check with Michael exactly what he thought. I asked Cohen for help to contact the couple, but he refused, citing confidentiality issues.
