Reader Article: Vita and 3DS- different consoles, similar games.

When looking at the game library's of the DS and PSP they are very different in of their games and content. We saw games that were designed for a large age range appear on the DS with the PSP having a smaller more niche set of games. The games showed the consoles key differences and made them both identifiable. Professor Layton on a PSP doesn't quite fit and the same could be said of Peace Walker on the DS. This seems to have changed with the next generation of handhelds. A recent konami release list showed a little king's story sequel being developed for Vita. In my opinion it is a game that felt very nintendolike I struggle to see it on Vita. Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid are games that we associate with Sony. I do not believe that the Vita and the 3DS are similar in terms of 1st party software but the 3rd party's seem to be making games that we could associate with both 3DS and Vita. This could make the battle between Vita and the 3DS focus on 1st party games that are unmistakably belonging to Nintendo or Sony, after all the 3rd party's seem to be making games that could now belong on either platform. This could work to Nintendo's advantage as they have the most recognizable brands and on their consoles the first party games far outsell the 3rd party's. On the online store front I expect Sony to come out on top simply because the Playstation network and Sony have a better relation ship with indie developers who are downloadable gaming's largest source of games. Yet on the online front the rise of apple shows a clear threat. Many ios games are neutral and could fit into any console and so developers may have an easier ride as they are not fighting against establilished brands. Then again developers like Gameloft produce games that are inferior imitations of a better product that can be found elsewhere. This generation's console war will in my opinion be a lot more of a close victory for one side as similar games will make the big names do the talking.

So it was quite a surprise to see this announcement of a sequel. It was even more of a surprise when I looked at the attached video and found a kind of 'choose your own adventure' wrapped around a horror version of Professor Layton.

DS & 3DS Release Dates: Professor Layton and Tetris

As I've mentioned previously, I haven't bought a copy of Tetris since I originally bought the game packaged with my original Game Boy. I just never saw a reason to spend money on a game I already owned and is now free to play online. However, this 3DS version of the game may be worth the purchase. I love how they found a way to make the game unique again using the 3DS. The biggest example of this is the use of the AR system to play 3D block games on your table.
