Race at Suzuka, says Honda boss

Deals with the radiation is still a small group of MotoGP riders yet to commit to the Japanese GP, but according to Honda MotoGP Team Shuhei Nakamoto main race could be saved by switching from the event at Suzuka Motegi.

After the tsunami and earthquake devastated the country in March, the date of the Japanese GP was postponed in April and moved to Oct. 2. However concerns have increased throughout the MotoGP contingent on the risk of radiation levels on the circuit of a leak at the Fukushima nuclear power plant 100 miles.

Voice their concerns about horse Motegi were the likes of Casey Stoner, Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi, who all insisted they would not travel to Japan. An independent review has been conducted since declaring a safe circuit and race officials have confirmed that the race will continue as planned.

Stoner admitted he is likely to compete after revealing his concerns grew with the announcement of the pregnancy of his wife.At the same time an email from Dorna to IRTA which was then relayed to the teams demanded that everyone should honor their contracts for the race, leading to reports that the Yamaha factory team will run alongside the various teams have already committed - including Tech 3 Yamaha and Aspar.

However, the presence of Rossi is still uncertain, as the Italian believes that riders must remain united as reported by GPON - they have more influence if they "stick".

Nakamoto think that moving to Suzuka would be ideal, as the circuit - which held the Japanese round of 1987 to 2003 - more than 400 miles from the danger zone and help keep the event running this year, even if the race is in six weeks.

Addressing Motosprint, Nakamoto said, "I say that we could race at Suzuka this year and then return to Motegi next year.

A major problem of this plan is the elimination of certification by the FIM Suzuka after the death of Daijiro Kato in 2003.It was something that Nakamoto more detail on, as his desire to MotoGP race at Suzuka is again a personal preference on the fast and technical circuit from the stop-and-go nature of Motegi. The circuit of the former would need to obtain approval of the FIM with the question about the run-off to turn 11 - changes that would be difficult to enforce.

Honda suggests switching Japanese GP from Motegi to Suzuka this ...

This year's Japanese Grand Prix could be saved by switching from the event at Suzuka Motegi, according to Honda MotoGP Team Shuhei Nakamoto key.

The race was plunged into doubt after the devastating tsunami and earthquake in the northwest of the country in March and forced the race to be postponed from April 24 to October 2.

Other concerns were raised over potential radiation levels on the circuit following a leak at the Fukushima nuclear power plant 70 miles away, with the likes of Casey Stoner, Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi all insisting that they would not travel to Japan for safety reasons.

While an independent review said Motegi course and race officials have confirmed that the race will proceed as planned, the Honda rider Stoner admitted that he is now likely to compete in the Grand Prix.

Rossi and Lorenzo, however, are among a group of runners who have yet to commit to travel, which raised further concerns about whether the race can take place.

Nakamoto believes that switching it to Suzuka - which held the Japanese Grand Prix from 1987-2003 and is more than 300 miles from the 'danger' zone - would be an ideal situation to safeguard the event this year, despite the race being only six weeks away.

However, he does not believe that the Honda-owned circuit would necessarily stage the event in future seasons.

"I say that we could race this year at Suzuka and then go back to Motegi from next year," Nakamoto told Motosprint . "Besides, I like Suzuka better: the circuit is nicer and more technical.[But] the international federation has removed the approval of the Suzuka track, it would need an exemption, and that needs to be done quickly.

"For sure three years ago the Suzuka track has undergone major renovation work on the circuit, run-off areas, and service roads around the track.

"The paddock has remained a bit overwhelmed, but for once it would not bother anyone. And the Suzuka Eight Hours, held regularly, shows that the bikes too, you can run there.
