US environmental and taxpayer groups unite to push green cuts programme

In one of the most unlikely alliances in Washington DC recently, the Friends of the Earth has teamed up with two of the premier groups of right-wing lobby in the United States jointly apply to expenditure cuts and phasing out subsidies accused of harming the environment and pushed the U.S. deficit.

As Congress continues to work to form a "supercommittee" responsible for identifying $ 1.5000000000000 spending cuts, the Friends of the Earth, taxpayers deficit hawk for the group Common Sense lobby, free market think tank the Heartland Institute and the Citizen Monitoring public consumption yesterday launched a report identifying $ 380 billion government spending is thought to harm the environment.

Entitled Green Scissors 2011, the report argues that about a quarter of the savings must find supercommittee could be achieved through economies which actually benefit the environment and could lead to reduced carbon emissions.

In particular, the report recommends that Congress slash unnecessary subsidies for fossil fuels, nuclear and certain alternative energy projects, such as $ 6 billion in tax breaks to producers of ethanol.

He also claims that a number of "poorly designed" road projects, "doubtful" Army Corps of Engineers water projects and policies that allow federal ownership of forest and mineral resources to be given away for free should all be discarded.

"As soon as the century-old mining law in 1872 that betrays the precious metals like gold and copper on federal lands for free for $ 53 billion in lost oil and gas revenues from leases in the free water Federal granted in the 1990s, the $ 6 billion per year of ethanol tax credit, there are dozens of reforms that can return hundreds of billions to taxpayers while helping to address the top priorities of our nation environment, "the report said.

Friends of the Earth's climate energy tax analyst Ben Schreiber said the cuts recommended are a way for Congress to develop bipartisan measures that should appeal to both Republicans and Democrats.

In the past month, the House has proposed more than a dozen measures that would repeal protections for our national clean water.
