Treat your appliances right, and they'll last longer
You probably don't think your everyday actions are harming your major appliances, but chances are, you're doing something to at least one of them that could lead to an emergency repair. Over time, abusing or neglecting your appliances will end their lives prematurely.
"Among the biggest mistakes people make when using their appliance is overuse and/or improper use and lack of routine maintenance," said Gary Miller, owner of Mr. Appliance of Indianapolis.
Add in not keeping the machines clean, and you have the three most common problems.
Here's a look at the dos and don'ts of appliance care:
Refrigerators: "The biggest thing is the lack of cleaning in the condenser area," Miller said. He recommends cleaning the condenser coils at the bottom of the unit with a brush before vacuuming.
A refrigerator with a bad seal can also lead to trouble. A good way to test if your seal is tight is to slide a piece of paper between the seal and the door. If the paper slides down with the door closed, you should have the unit inspected and seals replaced.
Also, be sure to keep the refrigerator plugged into a non-GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) outlet. Plugged into a GFCI outlet, a refrigerator could blow the circuit and power off. If you're not home for several hours or longer, you could lose perishable food items.
Stoves/ovens: The self-cleaning feature on ovens is notorious for creating more problems than it solves. Avoid running this, especially before a big dinner party.
"It does tend to create more problems for the appliance," said John Mathew of Mathew Appliance Repair in Carmel. "Everything has electronic controls now, so that can cause control panels to short out because of the excessive heat. If you are baking a pie and the pie spills over, I would just clean it up after you are done. Put a little (oven cleaner) on the spot and keep it clean."
Washing machines: Overloading a washing machine can cause it to prematurely wear out. Also, not having the water level at the proper setting for the amount of clothes is hard on a washer's motorized components.
