Judge: Immigration law will not take effect Sept. 1

Chief United States District Judge Sharon Lovelace Blackburn issued the temporary injunction Monday afternoon. The law was slated to go into effect Thursday.

In the injunction, Blackburn said the injunction will stand until at least Sept. 29, giving the court more time to consider motions filed by several parties challenging the law and asking for the law to be overturned.

The order also states it "is in no way addressing the merits of the motions," but only gives the court more time to consider them.

Blackburn is expected to issue detailed rulings on the merits of the pending motions for injunction no later than Sept. 28.

Gov. Robert Bentley said Monday afternoon he planned to continue to fight for the immigration bill.

"I look forward to the Judge ruling on the merits. We have long needed a tough law against illegal immigration in this state, and we now have one. I will continue to fight at every turn to defend this law against any and all challenges."

The state's immigration law was signed by Gov. Robert Bentley on June 9 and would require all law enforcement officers to "attempt to determine the immigration status of a person they suspect is an unauthorized alien of this country."

The law goes on to make it a criminal offense to provide transportation or housing to an illegal immigrant.

School officials could also be forced to check the citizenship of students and any business that knowingly employs an illegal immigrant will be penalized.

Blackburn heard a day full of arguments on Aug. 24 from the Obama administration, a coalition of civil rights groups and church leaders asking for the law to be blocked. Blackburn took no action that day.

The Obama administration argued in the lawsuit that enforcing immigration laws is the job of the federal government and not the states.

A second challenge was filed by a coalition of civil rights groups such as the Southern Poverty Law Center and the American Civil Liberties Union.

More young people in East Lancashire 'dropping out' (From ...

MORE and more young people in East Lancashire have become ‘drop-outs’, new figures show.

The numbers of 18 to 24-year-olds that are not in education, employment of training , NEET, has increased from last year.

Education bosses said there was ‘no quick fix’ to get youngsters back into some form of education or training.

But they are currently working with employers and education institutions to improve young people’s exam results and practical skills.

And Blackburn College has launched a Skills for Work initiative with the Job Centre Plus.

The college has had 1,000 referrals on its free training courses that develop work skills such as management and leadship since it launched six weeks ago.

The latest figures show that 4,100 youngsters in East Lancashire are currently on job seekers allowance compared to 3,660 in the same period last year -which equates to a 12 per cent increase.

And in the North West, overall government figures show the numbers classed at NEETs was up by 37,000 youngsters - a rise of 36 per cent.

Principal Ian Clinton said: “Blackburn College is delighted to be working with Job Centre Plus on the Skills for Work project.

“Unfortunately many people in East Lancashire are faced with the discouraging prospect of unemployment, I believe it is of the highest importance that we invest in the skills of these people and get them into work.

“This is why we have developed these innovative courses to give them the necessary skills they need for the workplace.”

Chair of the Pennine Lancashire Employment and Skills Board Mike Damms, who is also chief executive of East Lancashire Chamber of Trade, said: “We are conscious of the high levels of unemployment in young people and we must improve education attainment and get better work based skills.

“It is critical that careers advice that is given to young people is meaningful and relevant.
