Cinco Ranch grad enters music industry with indie pop album
Some people know the lyrics to favorite songs by heart; 22-year-old Kristen Stever, a 2007 Cinco Ranch graduate, writes the words to her own songs from her heart.
This April she released her first full-length album, Hearts Collide.
“It’s just my life. If something happens to me, I’ve written a song about it. I don’t think there’s any point in writing a song just to write songs,” she said. “You have to write about what you know.”
Shirley Stever, Kristen’s mother, said that her daughter has always loved to sing and would put on little concerts in their home, harmonizing with her older brother. Sometimes Kristen would borrow her mom’s video camera and record songs about the latest events in her life.
“I love everything about writing the music. It’s like therapy for me. It gives me a chance to explore different sides of what I’m going through and write from a different perspective,” Kristen said. “And it’s just fun. It’s part of who I am.”
She sang her way through high school choir, participated in the One Voice student choir group at Kingsland Baptist Church and led praise and worship for her Christian sorority at Texas A&M, where she graduated in May with a degree in marketing. Music had always been a faithful accompaniment to her life, but it wasn’t until her senior year of college that she decided to pursue music professionally — much to her parents’ surprise.
“She just explained that God was calling her,” Shirley said. “She felt it was really strong that he pressed on her to go into secular music just because there needs to be music and lyrics and songs for high school and college and young adults with decent, wholesome lyrics, instead of a lot of the lyrics that are out there.”
Kristen describes her music as belonging to the indie pop genre, and while others have compared her songs to those of Taylor Swift because of their story-like lyrics, she insists her music is uniquely her own, a diary of her life.

In the case of Bartholomew’s Gift, my most recent book, a song is part of the story. A beautiful shining lady sings to little Bartholomew. The song’s melody can’t be enjoyed if you are just reading the words. I felt the story begged for an audio narration.
The angel’s song sooths her words forth and rests in our heart so that we will remember. We have to hear it.
While reading the story to a group of 3 and 4-year-old girls at a local book store, I was intrigued to see how their eyes met mine when I began to sing the angel’s song. By the third rendition, one of the little girls began to softly sing along. She had the words in her heart already. I envision little ones being helped to sleep by the narration of the story ending with a soothing harp solo.
For Bartholomew’s Gift, the audio presentation rounds out the message of the story. It enables the child to experience Bartholomew’s story in a special way.
