Man accused of hate crime in Corvallis mosque arson

Corvallis - The federal police arrested Cody Seth Crawford, 24, Wednesday evening on a charge of hate crimes in what they say was a federal arson racist in a mosque in Corvallis.

The arrest comes eight months after November 28 firebomb the Islamic Center of Salman Alfarisi 610 NW Kings Boulevard Corvallis. Authorities quickly determined the fire that burned the office of the mosque, was an arson.

At the time of the alleged arson Crawford lived in a red brick house in the 2000 block of Northwest Polk Avenue, about a block or 200 feet south of the mosque.The minarets of the mosque are visible from the porch of the residence, according to a federal affidavit.

Federal law prohibits the defacement "intentional damage or destruction of any religious real property because of religion, racial or ethnic characteristics of the property, or (2) intentional obstruction by force or threat force or attempts to hinder any person in the enjoyment of that person's free exercise of religious beliefs.''

The fire occurred two days after the arrest of Mohamed Osman Mohamud federal, 19, a former student at Oregon State University accused in an alleged terrorist plot in Portland. Mohamud, an American citizen of Somali origin who once worshiped at the mosque in Corvallis, was arrested Nov. 26 on charges he tried to compensate for what he thought was a packed with explosives parked near van Pioneer Courthouse Square during the annual holiday tree lighting. The bomb was a fake provided by federal agents investigating the teenager for months.

Mohamud, now 20, pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial.

According to federal government records for a search warrant filed in U.S. District Court, Crawford has been identified as a "potential major contributor of DNA" found on a blue Maglite flashlight found the morning of the firebombing of an alley leading to the mosque.
