Patriotic buying of local stuff is perilous
Many citizen Perera’s and Silva’s who wish to do their mite for the country at one time or another cultivate a patriot mind set: ‘I will buy only things made in Sri Lanka. No more Indian, Chinese, Taiwanese, or other stuff for me, man, I am a patriot’.
Great thinking that, but the point is things manufactured locally for patriots to buy is limited. Apart from the local arrack (there’s nothing that could be compared with it, claim regular bar hoppers) when it comes to buying cars, bikes, pills, capsules, zips and buttons, fridges, air conditioners, TVs, hair curlers, burglar alarms, lipstick, deodorants, apples, pears and grapes–the list is endless like a road to Utopia–Lankans buy imported stuff. In a ‘why bother to make and grow these things, it’s so much easier to import them’ theme being the in-thing for generations, it’s not surprising. And myopic governments too kept the country going with foreign goodies. The people were basking in perpetual sunshine enjoying life. So, why rock the boat? While belated thoughts of stirring local production pots sent governments nutty because the overseas competition was too hectic, hard-headed fought shy of plunking their money here because the government did hooplas with their ever-changing ‘policies’.
Finally reality and economics, in that order, took over and the government told Lankans, ‘ make things if we are to survive’. One leading fox went to the extent of saying ‘export or perish’. But as everybody knows it was all a lot of crap as the Yanks say. But wait a minute; some items did hit production lines to be identified as ‘Made in Sri Lanka’ or at least ‘Packed in Sri Lanka’ the closest you can get to the made in Sri Lanka baila.
